About Black in Architecture
What we do: our main aim
Black in Architecture® Research Unit aims to amplify the voices of, and gather the lived experiences of architects and architecture students who identify as Black or Black British, to inform a charter for racial justice in UK architecture. The research and its associated activities makes up one strand of the initiative. The other strand is about proposing the charter for racial justice in architecture and inviting others who identify as Black or Black British to co-edit before the wider architecture community is invited to review, endorse and sign the charter. Please see our Background for more.
We reference the ARB’s ethnicity breakdown for the term Black or Black British.

Place Culture and Identity, The School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University
The Place, Culture and Identity research group at the School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University will host Black in Architecture® during the academic year 2021/2022. Planned in collaboration with the school, the initiative’s multi-layered programme brings together a symposium and workshop with external guest speakers, a series of reading and writing sessions, and an end-of-year exhibition. These will be delivered alongside an ongoing qualitative survey on the topic of race equity in architecture to steer the proposal for a racial justice charter.
"Black in Architecture® research unit is an important initiative that provides a forum for a much-needed discussion and can hopefully help to create a more inclusive field of architecture.
